Chaplet for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
- Feast: November
2nd
This chaplet consists of four decades (40
beads) in honor and in memory of the forty hours that Our Lord Jesus Christ
descended to the dead, to deliver and conduct to heaven all the souls
of the saints who died before Him. Aside from the forty beads there are
also five introductory beads.
On the Crucifix begin with the De
Profundis (Psalm 129)
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice!
O let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my pleading.
If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,
Lord, who would survive?
But with you is found forgiveness;
for this we revere you.
My soul is waiting for the Lord,
I count on his word.
My soul is longing for the Lord
more than watchman for daybreak.
Let the watchman count on daybreak
and Israel on the Lord.
Because with the Lord there is mercy
and fullness of redemption,
Israel indeed he will redeem
from all its iniquity. |
Next 5 Beads:
1. Our Father
2. Act of Faith
O my God, I firmly believe that Thou art one God in three Divine Persons,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; I believe that Thy Divine Son became man,
and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the
dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church
teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, who canst neither deceive nor
be deceived.
3. Act of Hope
O my God, relying on Thy almighty power and infinite mercy and promises,
I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace, and life everlasting,
through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer.
4. Act of Charity
O my God, I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul,
because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as
myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask
pardon of all whom I have injured.
5. Glory Be
On each of the forty beads:
Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation!
Following each decade:
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon
them. May they rest in peace.

Closing prayer:
O most gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever
consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have
mercy on the souls of our departed friends and relatives especially those
who were near and dear to us in life. Bring them far from the shadow of
exile to the bright home of Heaven where, we trust, Thou and Thy Blessed
Mother have woven for them a crown of unfading bliss. Amen.
Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament have mercy on the souls of the faithful
departed. Amen.
